Newborn Essentials: What You Actually Need vs. What’s Nice to Have
Preparing for your baby’s arrival can be exciting—and overwhelming. With endless lists, ads, and well-meaning advice, it’s hard to know what you truly need for those early weeks. As a postpartum doula, I’ve seen firsthand which items families actually reach for again and again, and which ones end up collecting dust. Here's a guide to help you sort through the must-haves vs. the nice-to-haves.
Must-Have Newborn Essentials
These items will make the early days smoother for you and your baby:
Diapers + Wipes: Whether cloth or disposable, you’ll go through these quickly.
A Safe Sleep Space: A bassinet or crib with a firm mattress and fitted sheet.
Onesies + Sleepers: Choose soft, easy-to-snap outfits. Zippers = your new best friend.
Swaddles or Sleep Sacks: Great for calming and safe sleep.
Burp Cloths + Receiving Blankets: You can never have too many!
A Supportive Feeding Setup: Whether bottle or breast, have comfy pillows, snacks, water, and a cozy chair.
Car Seat: Required for taking baby anywhere—make sure it's properly installed.
Basic Baby Care Supplies: Nail clippers, a thermometer, a nasal aspirator, and gentle baby soap.
Nice-to-Haves (But Not Must-Haves)
These can be helpful but aren’t essential right away:
A Changing Table: A changing pad on a dresser or bed works just as well.
Wipe Warmer: Not necessary, but can be soothing.
Bottle Warmer + Sterilizer: Convenient, but not required.
Fancy Outfits: Cute for photos, not practical for daily wear.
Swing, Bouncer, or Bassinet with Extras: Some babies love them, some don’t—you won’t know until you try.
What You Really Need More Than Gear
Honestly? What new parents need most is support. Someone to hold the baby while you shower. Someone to cook a meal, fold the laundry, or reassure you that you’re doing a great job. That kind of support is what makes the difference.
You don’t need to buy everything to be ready. Focus on the basics, and give yourself grace to figure things out as you go. If you need help preparing for life with your newborn or want hands-on support once baby arrives, I’m here for you!
