Tummy Time Tips: Why It’s Important and How to Make It Fun
Tummy time might sound simple, but it’s one of the most important things you can do to support your baby’s development in their first months. It helps strengthen muscles, build motor skills, and sets the stage for milestones like rolling, crawling, and sitting. The good news? It doesn’t have to feel like a chore. Here’s how to make tummy time both beneficial and fun—for you and your baby!
Why Tummy Time Matters
💪 Builds strength in the neck, shoulders, arms, and core
🧠 Supports motor skill development and body awareness
👶 Prevents flat spots on baby’s head from too much time on their back
🤱 Encourages bonding and face-to-face interaction
When to Start
You can begin tummy time as soon as you bring your baby home! In the early days, just a few minutes at a time, 2-3 times a day, is enough. As your baby gets stronger and more alert, you can increase both the length and frequency.
Simple Tummy Time Ideas
Chest-to-chest: Lie back and let baby rest on your chest while you're reclined. It's cozy, and your baby will love looking at your face.
Blanket time: Lay baby on a soft blanket or play mat. Get down at their level and cheer them on!
Tummy mirror: Babies love looking at themselves. Place an unbreakable mirror in front of them for extra motivation.
Lap time: Place baby across your lap for a few minutes of supported tummy time.
Toy rotation: Use colorful toys, crinkle books, or rattles to keep things interesting and encourage reaching and head lifting.
Make It a Routine
Try adding tummy time after diaper changes, before naps, or during play sessions. It doesn’t need to be perfect—just consistent. Some babies fuss at first, but keep it short, gentle, and fun. Even one minute counts!
