Breastfeeding Basics: What to Expect in the First Few Weeks

The early days of breastfeeding can be full of questions, emotions, and learning curves. If you’re wondering what’s “normal” or feeling unsure about how things are going, you’re not alone. Breastfeeding is natural, but it’s also a skill both you and your baby are learning together.

This guide will walk you through what to expect in the first few weeks and how to set yourself up for a successful (and supported!) start.

What’s Normal in the Beginning?

🍼 Frequent Feedings
Newborns typically nurse 8–12 times in 24 hours. That can feel like a lot, but it’s how they build your milk supply and get the nutrition they need.

🕓 Cluster Feeding
Expect periods where your baby wants to nurse constantly, especially in the evenings. It’s normal and temporary, even if it’s exhausting.

💧 Leaking & Engorgement
Your body is adjusting! Leaking, engorgement, or uneven fullness are common early on. Gentle massage, nursing frequently, and cool compresses can help.

Tips to Set Yourself Up for Success

🤱 Skin-to-Skin Contact
Spend time with your baby snuggled against your chest. It regulates their temperature, calms them, and helps with latching and milk supply.

📞 Ask for Help Early
Pain, latch issues, or low confidence? Reach out to a lactation consultant or postpartum doula (like me!) early, before things snowball.

🛋️ Create a Feeding Station
Have snacks, water, burp cloths, nipple balm, and your phone or remote nearby. Feeding sessions can be long, so be sure to make them comfortable!

Breastfeeding in the early weeks can feel overwhelming, messy, and beautiful, all at the same time.
The most important thing to remember? You don’t have to figure it out alone. With the right support and realistic expectations, you can feel confident and connected during this special chapter.
